The Great Jerky Caper – Page 1

"I'm Rowley, and I'm eight years old now. But when I was just three, something amazing happened. It was 1973, and my dad, Roger, who used to be a Forest Ranger before I was born, decided we were going on a grand adventure: a camping trip to Yellowstone Park in Montana!"

"My dad, Roger, was the best. Even though he wasn't a ranger anymore, he still knew all about the woods and how to stay safe. He was so excited for this trip, and his excitement was contagious. We packed up our old station wagon and a brand-new aluminum pop-up camper we’d bought in Washington, ready for the long drive."

"Our first big stop in Montana was at a general store. Dad said we needed provisions, and he came out with the biggest bag of beef jerky I’d ever seen! It smelled so good, savory and smoky. He said it was for the long journey ahead, and we carefully put it inside the new pop-up camper for safekeeping."

"We also met up with our family! My mom, Susan, my big brother Mark, and my bigger sister Lisa were already there. And my cousin Chrissy, who had the prettiest red-brown hair and a big, friendly smile, was coming with her much older brother Michael and sister Patricia, and Aunt and Uncle Ray! It was going to be a big family adventure."

"When we finally arrived at our campsite in Yellowstone, the air was crisp and smelled of pine. Instead of setting up our new pop-up camper trailer for sleeping, Dad decided we’d all sleep in Aunt and Uncle Ray’s big cab-over camper. It sat right in the bed of their full-sized truck, with a cozy sleeping bunk over the cab. It felt like a giant, cozy fort!"

"That night, tucked safely inside the cab-over camper, Chrissy and I were peeking out the window. We heard strange noises outside. Rustling, sniffing, and then a loud ripping sound! We watched, wide-eyed, as a huge shadow moved by the light of the moon."

"We saw it! A giant grizzly bear was tearing at our little pop-up camper trailer, which was still hooked to the back of our station wagon. It pulled and ripped, and we could hear Mom and Dad's hushed, worried whispers from the bunk below. We didn't close our eyes for a second."

"The next morning, the sun streamed into the cab-over. We climbed out, and that's when we saw it. Our brand-new, shiny pop-up camper trailer was no longer shiny or new. It was torn to shreds, like a giant monster had played with it! There were huge claw marks and teeth marks everywhere."

"And the beef jerky! All that delicious, smoky jerky was gone. Not a single piece left. It was clear who the culprit was: the very hungry grizzly bear we had seen! I expected Dad to be very sad about his new camper and all that lost jerky. But he wasn't."

"He knelt down, pulled me and Chrissy into a big hug, and said, 'I'm just so glad you two are safe. Things can be replaced, but you can't.' That day, I learned that some things are more important than stuff. My dad, Roger, taught me that the most valuable things in life are the people you love and the memories you make, even if they involve a very hungry bear and a ruined camper. It was an adventure I'll never forget!"
