The Ghost and the Starry Night – Page 1
"Lily and Sam were the best of friends. After school, their laughter would fill the halls of Lily's house as they built block towers and drew comics. Whisper, the friendly ghost, would float nearby, trying to join in. But their games were so fast and solid, he often felt like he was watching from behind a window."

""Look, Whisper!" Lily would say, holding up a drawing of a superhero squirrel. But before Whisper could get a good look, Sam would have a new idea. "Let's make him a cape!" he'd shout, and he and Lily would be off again, a whirlwind of paper and crayons. Whisper's happy glow flickered, feeling a little less bright."

"One afternoon, Lily and Sam had a big school project: a diorama of the solar system. "We need to make the planets!" Sam announced, spreading craft supplies across the dining table. "I'll make Jupiter!" said Lily. They worked with glue and paint, completely absorbed in their cosmic creation."

"Whisper wanted to help. He saw a stray piece of glitter and tried to nudge it towards their model of Saturn to make the rings sparkle. But his ghostly push sent a little puff of air that knocked over the pot of black paint, splattering it across the table! "Whisper, be careful!" Lily cried, sounding annoyed."

"His light dimmed with sadness. Feeling clumsy and in the way, Whisper drifted silently up the stairs to the dusty attic. He hid behind an old armchair, watching the sliver of light from under the door. He could hear Lily and Sam's happy chatter below, and he felt more alone than ever."

"Downstairs, Lily and Sam put the finishing touches on their diorama. "It looks good," Sam said, "but the stars are just white dots. They don't look magical." Lily agreed. "I know who would have a good idea," she said, looking around the room. "Whisper?""

"They searched the house, calling his name. Finally, Lily remembered the attic. She tiptoed up the creaky stairs and pushed the door open. "Whisper?" she called softly. She found him by the armchair, his glow so faint he was almost invisible. "We missed you," Lily said. "And we need your help.""

""You do?" Whisper buzzed, his light instantly growing a little stronger. "Our stars don't twinkle," Sam explained, coming up the stairs and holding the diorama for him to see. A brilliant idea sparked in Whisper's mind. "I can't hold a paintbrush," he said, "but I can shine!""

"He showed them how to use a pin to poke tiny holes in the back of the box. Then, he floated behind it and shone his light. Instantly, the inside of the box was filled with a hundred tiny, twinkling stars. It was more magical than any paint or glitter. "Wow!" breathed Lily and Sam together."

"The three friends stood together, admiring their work. "You made it perfect, Whisper," Lily said, giving him a warm hug that passed right through his shimmering form. Whisper glowed brighter than he had all day. He had learned that friendship isn't a light that gets divided; it just grows bigger with every new friend who shares it."
