Alice and the Great Erasure – Page 1
"Alice stood in the Golden Afternoon, the world humming with a magic she'd only dreamed of. But the dream was fraying at the edges. The White Rabbit, Nivens, wrung his paws. "The Queen of Hearts has poisoned the land with her rage, Your Highness," he stammered. "Her card soldiers patrol every path. Hope is… unfashionably late." The Ace of Spades in Alice's hand pulsed with a gentle warmth, a promise in the growing gloom."

"The air shimmered, and the grin of the Cheshire Cat, Chessur, bloomed in the sky like a mischievous moon. "The Queen knows you're here," he purred, his voice a riddle that tickled the ear. "Her temper is, shall we say, shorter than a dormouse's tail. You'll need allies. You'll need the Hatter." A single claw pointed towards the Tulgey Wood before he vanished, leaving his smile to hang in the air for a moment longer."

"Before they could take a step, the ground trembled with the rhythmic march of tin feet. A patrol of card soldiers, their spade-headed pikes gleaming, emerged from the trees. "For the Queen!" they chanted. "Seize the pretender!" Nivens grabbed Alice's hand. "This way, Your Highness! We must be elsewhere, immediately!""

"They found refuge in the murky depths of the Tulgey Wood. Nivens led her to a clearing where a long, dilapidated table was set for a tea party, though no one seemed to be celebrating. Teacups were cracked, chairs were overturned, and at the head of the table sat the Mad Hatter, his famous orange hair looking dull and lifeless, his eyes lost in a distant sorrow."

""Hatter?" Alice asked. He didn't stir. "No time for tea," he muttered to himself. "Never time. It's always six o'clock. Always the moment she took everything." He gestured a limp hand towards a pile of broken clocks and half-finished hats, all frozen in time. The clearing felt heavy with his despair."

"Alice thought of her grandmother's journal, of the stories of the Hatter's rebellious wit. She stepped forward and placed the glowing Ace of Spades on the table before him. "The Queen hasn't won," she said, her voice clear and strong. "Wonderland needs its champion. And I need my hatter.""

"A spark ignited in the Hatter's eyes. He looked from the card to Alice's determined face, and for the first time, he truly saw her. "Alice," he whispered, the name a forgotten treasure. A slow, wide smile, the smile of legend, spread across his face. "You've come back." As he stood, the colors of his mismatched clothes seemed to brighten, chasing the gray away."

"Their reunion was shattered by the sound of snapping twigs and clanking armor. The Queen's soldiers had found them. "Time to go!" the Hatter cackled, his old, wonderful madness returning. He plucked a giant hatpin from his lapel. "Or perhaps," he added with a grin, "it's time for a little redecorating!""

""We don't have to run," Alice declared. She held the Ace of Spades aloft, focusing all her will into it. A shimmering shield of golden light, shaped like a spade, erupted from the card, effortlessly deflecting the soldiers' pikes. The Hatter and Nivens stared, their mouths agape."

"In her castle of twisted crimson, the Queen of Hearts, Iracebeth, watched the scene unfold in a basin of scrying water. Her painted face contorted with fury. "So, the little heir has learned a new trick," she snarled at her Knave. "No matter. There are darker things in Wonderland than my guards. Release the Jabberwock's shadow.""
